Xi'an City Wall Overview

A comprehensive guide to Xi'an City Wall, the most complete ancient city wall in China and a symbol of the city's rich history.

Xi'an City Wall is the best-preserved ancient city wall in China, originally built during the Tang Dynasty and reconstructed during the Ming Dynasty. The wall stretches 13.74 kilometers around the old city center, standing 12 meters tall and 15-18 meters wide at the top. It was built to protect the city from external threats, and today it stands as a testament to Xi'an's glorious past.

The wall features four grand gates — the East Gate (Changlemen), West Gate (Andingmen), South Gate (Yongningmen), and North Gate (Anyuanmen) — each with historic watchtowers. Visitors can walk, cycle, or take a sightseeing ride along the top of the wall, enjoying panoramic views of the ancient city and the modern metropolis beyond.

Recommended Tour Routes

  • Highlight Walk (approx. 2 hours): Ascend at Yongning Gate (South Gate) and walk east to Jianguo Gate or Zhongshan Gate to descend. This is the wall's most scenic stretch, offering the best photo spot framing the Bell Tower, with the most nearby attractions and food options.
  • Cycling Challenge (approx. 1.5–3 hours): Rent a bike on the wall — single bike ¥45 / 3 hrs, tandem ¥90 / 3 hrs. Ride counter-clockwise for more downhill and an easier trip. Note: the summer sun is brutal with almost no shade on the wall, so daytime cycling is not recommended.
  • "Lazy" Option (Free): Skip the wall top and stroll or cycle along Shuncheng Lane on the inner side. Shaded and cool, it still delivers the grandeur of the wall plus local street life — the north and west sections are especially quiet.

Which Gate for Food?

The streets around the wall form Xi'an's food map — pick the right gate to step straight into a food street!

Gate What You'll Find Nearby
Yongning Gate
(South Gate)
Leads to bustling South Street, near SKP and Wangfujing malls, walking distance to Shuyuan Gate cultural street.
Wenchang Gate Adjacent to the Beilin Museum and Shuyuan Gate — a rich cultural vibe.
Zhongshan Gate
(Little East Gate)
Steps from the famous Yongxingfang — sample Shaanxi's intangible-heritage foods in one stop and try the bowl-smashing wine.
Jianguo Gate Connects to the Old Market Creative District — indie shops and graffiti walls, ideal for young travelers to explore and shoot.
Anding Gate
(West Gate)
Closest to Sajinqiao, the food street locals love — for the most authentic Xi'an flavors.

Best Times to Visit & Photograph

  • Around sunset: Soft light for stunning shots of the ancient city at dusk, with comfortable temperatures — the most pleasant time to be on the wall.
  • At night: The wall lights up after dark, creating a magical, atmospheric scene.
  • Avoid midday: 12:00–15:00 is peak sun exposure with no shade on the wall — high risk of heatstroke. Definitely avoid this window!
